genre: historical fiction

You wouldn’t have wanted to be a girl living in rural China 200 years ago. Ever since she was a baby, Lily knew that to be a girl meant you were destined for a hard life. You must obey your elders, especially your father. You must obey your husband. You must work very hard to show that you are worth even the food you eat. Yet, as Lily comes to find out, there is a discreet female world in which friendships are cherished, beauty is created and new life is celebrated. Even as her feet are bound and she is trained to be married out, Lily finds morsels of joy – especially in that of her truest friend, Snow Flower.

Snow Flower and Lily communicate in the secret language that is taught by women and this book is mostly a narrative of their relationship, how it grows and changes as they become women and start separate married lives. As we become immersed in the China of Lily’s day, we come to realize how agonizing women’s lives could be and how limited they were in the choices they could make.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is an incredibly readable book. It’s written as a sort of autobiography, and so we are seeing the past through Lily’s experience and hindsight. While I like the style, I’ll be honest, all the foreshadowing was very frustrating. It made for a less exploratory reading experience for me and, in some ways, tainted my view of Lily as a character. I suppose, though, that I appreciated how seriously she took her actions and was honest about her regret. I just wish I could’ve read about it AFTER the actions happened and not before.

Otherwise, this story just DRIPS with China and Chinese culture and tradition. I really loved that about it – I loved that these women and their common life experiences were given a voice. As a story of a friendship and as an intimate look behind the latticed upper windows of the women’s chambers in a China of not-so-long-ago, this book is definitely worth trying.

PRINTS AND PRINTS AGAIN And so I keep on testing various prints, I must admit that it’s one of my favourite trend for this spring and obsiously for the upcoming summer season. It just looks so bright festiv and colourfull, wearing this kind of clothes instantly sets me in a good mood. Yes, indeed my clothing can have a real influence on my mood. Am I weird or does it happen to you as well? I have fallen in love with this dress as soon as I saw it in Zara last week, they definitely have amazing garments and keep on doing better. Seriously, I think I’d be able to dress up only there. I always find the right piece, the one I was looking for and that no other affordable brand has. So : high five. Basically, the dress, the shoes and the clutch are from Zara ( who says that it’s too ” mainstream” to wear a one brand outfit?) but the sunnies are from H&M. I hot real lucky when I saw them, it was the last pair so of course I grabed’em. And absolutely adore their shape and delicate cream colour. Everything just seems perfect about them. Finally I paired some neon Rocks Paper Metal earring, to add a little bright detail to the look ( this brand has got some amazing bright jewerly, gorgeous friendship bracelets and statement necklaces, got to check it out). Hope you like my outfit!

Good news, James and I are heading to Paris in a couple of days for a blogger event held by Yves Saint Laurent. We are absolutely thrilled to be back to the city, and are so excited to buy bags of macarons at Ladurée ( even if we have one in Geneva, it doesn’t matter, eating macarons in Paris is much more classy isn’t it) and of course make some pictures.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day — which means big business for the flower industry.

Mother’s Day accounts for one-quarter of U.S. floral purchases made for the holidays, eclipsing even Valentine’s Day.

But behind every colorful bouquet of fresh cut flowers is a story of foreign labor abuse and environmental destruction.

We spoke with Alania Paradise, president of certified Fair Trade flower company One World Flowers, about the hidden issues in the global flower trade and what consumers can do to have a positive impact.

Business Insider: What is the average customer not aware of when he purchases fresh flowers?

Alania Paradise: The average consumer usually is completely unaware of where their flowers come from, the practices that are used on the farms to grow them, and the complexities of the supply chain that brought those flowers to their local store.

To begin, the supply chain is dominated by massive customers in the United States and Europe that buy huge amounts of flowers and are able to dictate rock-bottom prices to the farms in developing countries.

Growing flowers is a labor-intensive business, so farms really have two main sources of cost: floral inputs like land and water and labor. When farms need to cut costs, they obviously can’t stop watering the flowers, so the first place to make cuts is in labor.

The results in the floral industry worldwide are underpaid workers who are forced into unpaid overtime or given outrageous quotas to meet before getting paid. Benefits and healthcare are rarely ever provided, and even basic necessities are denied like protective gear to keep workers safe from chemicals used on the farm. Other abuses can also prevail on floral farms where sexual or physical abuse is used to control a typically all-female workforce.

BI: Where do the majority of our supermarket bouquets and other cut flowers comes from?

AP: Over 90 percent of the cut flowers sold in the United States come from outside our country. The majority of imported flowers are grown in Colombia, Ecuador, and Kenya. Most supermarket bouquets come from African countries that produce smaller, less expensive varieties. All of our flowers come from Ecuador where premium varieties are grown and the blooms are much larger.

BI: What does it mean to be a Fair Trade Certified Farm?

AP: There are three main pillars to the Fair Trade program: Social Justice, Environmental Protection and Economic Development.

Social Justice means the Fair Trade farms change how they treat people, the main focus of the program. Fair Trade farms are guaranteed a minimum price for their roses when they sell to Fair Trade Importers like One World Flowers. That minimum price gives them a guarantee that they can cover their costs, make a profit, and pay their workers well. Workers are given a living wage, which is much higher than a country’s minimum wage, so they can support their families adequately. In addition, they are provided with benefits, healthcare, paid sick leave, and many other programs to give them a better quality of life.

Environmental Protection means that flower farms must eliminate a list of over 100 of the most harmful agrochemicals immediately. They begin using natural products like cayenne pepper and chamomile extract to deter pests, and many farms begin integrating organic growing practices.

Economic Development is the pillar of Fair Trade that makes it more than a “feel good” program, it makes it a sustainable business model that lasts. The fair price coming in to the farm, and the fair wages being paid to the workers are part of making Fair Trade economically viable for the floral farm. In addition to these, One World Flowers and other Fair Trade importers pay a 10 percent premium on all purchases back to a fund that is controlled by floral workers. The workers organize democratically and vote on how those funds will be used to improve their communities.

BI: Why is Fair Trade important?

AP: Fair Trade is important all year, but especially at Mother’s Day because it can make a world of difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of women worldwide. Not to mention their children’s lives too.

BI: How can consumers have a positive impact on the global flower trade — and where does One World Flowers fit into this?

One World Flowers

Helping Haiti bouquet.

AP: It’s important for consumers in the United States to understand that the choices they make when purchasing products like flowers for Mother’s Day can either make a positive or a negative difference in the world, and choosing Fair Trade is the right way to go. Flowers from One World Flowers and other Fair Trade importers might cost more, but it’s because they should. The extra cost is so a mother in Ecuador can feed her family tonight, and the environment around them will be healthy when her children grow up.

Bi: What bouquet do you recommend for mom this year?

AP: Our most popular bouquet this year has been the Helping Haiti bouquet. It’s a pink and coral Fair Trade rose bouquet. In addition to the 10% Fair Trade premium, One World Flowers also donates 10% of the sale price on this bouquet to relief efforts in Haiti.

If you love someone, you ought to think about writing them a poem every day, or finding one to read to them. People loved to be loved in this way, I think.

“Lovers, forget your love,

And list to the love of these,

She a window flower,

And he a winter breeze.

When the frosty window veil

Was melted down at noon,

And the caged yellow bird

Hung over her in tune,

He marked her through the pane,

He could not help but mark,

And only passed her by,

To come again at dark.

He was a winter wind,

concerned with ice and snow,

Dead weeds and unmated birds,

And little of love could know.

But the flower leaned aside

And thought of naught to say,

And morning found the breeze

A hundred miles away.”

Kimberly Ahern, who works in the Empire State Building, came with a few colleagues during her lunch break. Equipped with plastic bags, plastic gloves, boxes and scissors, they quickly got to work and extracted a few dozen bulbs from pots of wilted tulips.

“We’re going to take whatever variety is left,” she said, “and we’ll be a little surprised next spring.”

When stored in a cool, dry place, the bulbs can be planted in the fall and will be ready to bloom again next spring. That was Paula Lombardo’s plan. Lombardo works nearby at Macy’s and decided to stop by when a co-worker told her about the free bulbs. She scored a shopping bag full of bulbs after spending a few minutes sorting through garbage bags filled with soil and uprooted tulips.

“I’m a flower lover and I spend tons of money every year,” Lombardo said. “I decided to take advantage and I came with my little shopping bag.”

You can pick up some yourself by visiting Greeley Square on Sixth Avenue between 32nd street and 33rd Street, until they’re all gone or Friday.
